The Black-and-Red, three-time winners of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup are set to return to the Cup in 2025. The qualification structure was determined by MLS, and it was decided that MLS teams not competing in either Leagues Cup or Concacaf Champions Cup will automatically qualify for the U.S. Open Cup. DC has won the Open Cup three times (1996, 2008, and 2013), and is looking to add their fourth title.
Troy Lesesne, DC United coach, stated in D.C United's second presser of the preseason: "I came from the lower divisions, so the US Open Cup means a lot to me personally. We'll try to compete as much as we can. This is an opportunity to compete for a trophy and we are going to go for it in any way possible. I'd love to add a fourth trophy as part of the legacy for our club."

The winner of the Open Cup automatically qualifies for the Concacaf Champions Cup. With the possibility of featuring in the Champions Cup again, Troy added: "That is something we want to get back to. The history of the club is such that we have won it before and not many MLS teams have been able to do. To be able to get back to that competition is one of the goals."
D.C. United won the Concacaf tournament back in 1998 and is one of the three MLS (L.A. Galaxy and Seattle Sounders) teams that have won the international tournament. The Black-and-red last featured on the international stage in the 2015-2016 season and has made 12 appearances in its 30-season history.
As Garrison Tubbs, D.C. United defender, said in First Eleven Episode: "D.C. United is not in a rebuild situation, they are in a situation where they can win now". https://x.com/davejsports/status/1890087503052582973
This 2025 season, the MLS team from the Nation's capital, is a contender for the both tournaments (MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup) and should strive to lift silverware this season.
Will D.C. United lift a trophy this season?
Of Course!
Not this season.
