MLS Announces Releases Free Agency, End-of-Year Waivers, and Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Process

Major League Soccer on Wednesday, Dec. 10, announced the list of players eligible for Free Agency, as well as the opening of the End-of-Year Waivers process and the schedule for Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft on Thursday, Dec. 11. The league noted that the Re-Entry List is subject to change, and the finalized group of players eligible for Re-Entry, Stage 2 will be released the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Free Agency Opens Today (Dec. 10)

MLS Free Agency officially opens tomorrow, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. ET. To qualify, players must be at least 24 years old and have a minimum of four years of MLS service.

Eligible players may negotiate with any MLS club, including their current team, subject to league roster rules. Out-of-contract players who have received a Bona Fide Offer remain eligible for Free Agency. MLS places no limit on the number of free agents a club may sign in a given offseason.

Three former D.C. United players — Luis Barraza, Christian Benteke, Randall Leal, and Lukas MacNaughton — are among the players available for Free Agency, making them potential targets across the league as clubs reshape their rosters.

End-of-Year Waivers Process Now Open

The End-of-Year Waivers process is now underway, offering clubs the first chance to claim players who do not meet the requirements for Free Agency or the Re-Entry Draft.

Selection order follows the reverse order of the 2025 regular-season standings, adjusted for postseason performance. D.C. United holds the first pick after finishing in last place during the 2025 season, giving the club priority in making a claim. MLS Cup presented by Audi champions Inter Miami CF hold the 30th and final pick in each round.

Clubs have until Thursday, Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. ET to submit a waiver claim.

Re-Entry Draft, Stage 1 Begins Dec. 11

Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft begins Thursday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. ET. The draft order mirrors the End-of-Year Waivers process, proceeding in reverse order of the 2025 standings and factoring in postseason results.

The Re-Entry Draft provides clubs the opportunity to select players who are at least 22 years old, have a minimum of one year of MLS service, and are not eligible for Free Agency. Out-of-contract players who have received a Bona Fide Offer from their current club are not eligible for the Re-Entry Draft.

The final roster mechanism of the MLS offseason will be Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft, which will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 17. The updated list of players eligible for Re-Entry, Stage 2 will also be released on the morning of Dec. 17, giving clubs a final opportunity to add experienced MLS talent before the winter window continues.
