Ahead of D.C. United’s crucial midweek clash against the New England Revolution, head coach Troy Lesesne addressed the media in a pre-match press conference, offering insights into injury updates, tactical priorities, and how the Black-and-Red plans to maintain momentum through a pivotal stretch in the MLS season.
Injury Update: Jackson Doubtful
Lesesne confirmed that midfielder Jackson suffered a knock to his hip flexor area in the recent match against the New York Red Bulls. While not a long-term concern, his status for the upcoming match remains uncertain. “It’s something we’ll manage within a week or so,” Lesesne said.
Unlocking the Final Third
D.C. United’s attack has shown promise throughout the season in reaching advanced positions, but Lesesne emphasized the need for smarter decisions once in the final third. “We’ve been good at getting into wide positions all year, but we need to recognize when to serve and when to recycle,” he said. “When it’s not on, we need to be comfortable pulling back and finding another solution.”
Players like Gabi, Peglow, Jared, and Hosei were praised for their ability to combine quickly in tight spaces, with Lesesne noting the importance of maximizing their skills when the team pushes numbers forward. “It’s about how we take advantage of those moments without settling for low-percentage crosses.”
Limiting Costly Turnovers
One key point of concern remains the team’s vulnerability during transitions. Lesesne acknowledged that turnovers, particularly in the first and last 10 minutes of each half—have directly led to opposition goals. “We’ve been hurt by that several times this year,” he said. “Managing those phases more pragmatically is essential.”
Next-Man-Up Mentality Amid Injuries
While key players like Russell Canouse and Steve Birnbaum were major absences in the past, Lesesne highlighted that this season poses a different challenge, especially with Golden Boot winner Christian Benteke sidelined. Still, he refuses to dwell on what’s missing.
“I want to focus on the guys we do have,” he stressed. “Hosei, Peglow, Schnegi, and Jacob have all scored this season. My job is to keep giving them the tools to succeed.”
Maintaining the Edge Against New England
Lesesne is undefeated against New England in his D.C. United tenure, with a 3-1 win at Audi Field and a 2-1 victory at Gillette Stadium. However, he’s not taking anything for granted. “They’re a different team now, as are we,” he said. “We have to create more attacks if we want to keep that streak going.”
Setting the Tone for the Season
With four games looming before the mid-season break, Lesesne acknowledged the importance of this stretch. “These matches—New England, Chicago at home, and Cincinnati and Salt Lake on the road—are critical,” he said. “We’ve set realistic expectations and believe we can get results at home. That starts tomorrow night.”
Standout Performers: Luis Barraza and Hosei Kijima
Goalkeeper Luis Barraza continues to be a key figure for D.C. United. Lesesne credited goalkeeper coach Cody Mizell for the consistent performances across the position group. “Luis has made huge saves for us—like against NYCFC—that give us momentum in matches.”
Midfielder Hosei Kijima was also singled out for his contributions. “He’s been very versatile, playing in multiple roles and delivering goals and assists. He’s been a complete player for us this season.”
As D.C. United prepares to face a revitalized New England side. Coach Lesesne’s message is clear: focus on what you can control, trust your players, and execute with discipline in key moments.
Kickoff against the New England Revolution is set for Wednesday night (7:30 pm) at Audi Field. The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will be available for fans to take pictures.
